"I Tried It!": Smart Ones Bust My Breakfast Boredom

Last week I bemoaned my breakfast boredom. This week, I am reviewing a product that single-handedly has helped me banish my a.m. meal malaise.

I have been a fan of the Smart Ones frozen meal varieties for a long time and I have a few staples that I keep on hand at all times. Recently I found out that a few new varieties would be making their way to store shelves. When I heard that one of them was French toast, I did a little happy dance.

To me, French toast is one of those ultimate comfort foods. I can still remember the day I made it the first time; I felt like I was a chef extraordinaire. But, these days I don't really take the time to make breakfast and I often rely on a cereal serving or yogurt (hence last week's dullsville dillema).

First plus point? It came with it own syrup serving. My immediate reaction was, aw how cute ... a teensy weensy syrup. Then I was happy because its inclusion meant that the PointsPlus value on the box included the syrup. I was already debating whether or not to splurge some PointsPlus values on real syrup or to save calories (and thereby PointsPlus values) by using the sugar-free stuff I've switched to recently. So, I did not have to make that choice, or measure the syrup. Hooray!

I am happy to report that the French toast breakfast meal from the Smart Ones line rivals my homemade French toast. It has just the right balance of sweet and spice -- not too much sugar, not too much cinnamon. I was amazed at how the bread came out --- not even hard around the edges like those microwave frozen sandwiches tend to do. The turkey sausage was flavorful and juicy.

I was worried at first that I was so burned out on my stand-by breakfasts that I was biased and thought it was great because it was neither Cream of Wheat nor whole-grain cold cereal. But, it passed the test in flying colors. How do I know for sure? We did a side by side comparison at my house!

I made my French toast with the light style bread we happened to have on hand this week, Wonder light wheat and I used Jimmy Dean turkey sausage links (fully cooked). Then we did a blind-folded taste test. That's right, some serious research here!

No one in my family -- including me! -- could tell which was the Smart Ones French toast and which I had made at home! For the added convenience of simply placing it in the microwave, it's hands-down my fave go-to breakfast now.

The meal will run you about $2.50 to 3.00 depending on where you shop. (Though I have since nabbed more on sale for around $1.99).

The whole thing is worth 7 PointsPlus values. If you are not following Weight Watchers the calorie count is less than 300 calories so it's still a diet-friendly choice even if you're not on the plan.

Have you tried a diet-friendly food lately and enjoyed it? Or, has something not passed muster with your own taste test? Post your tips, recommendations or picks in the comments section!
